Bluffs of Beaver Bend are a peninsula of land containing over a mile of river frontage along the White River with a varied terrain and unusual diversity, 100 feet of pure Mansfield sandstone. This stunning sight runs between the bluffs and scenic White River. The bluffs are owned by the Nature Conservancy and are protected by the State’s Department of Natural Resources.
Houghton House Aaron Houghton built the mansion across the river from Mt. Pleasant in 1835. The Houghton House was well known in the early 1900s as the Mount Vernon of the West. The restored house has many of the original features, including a free-standing curved staircase, some of the original furnishings, and a square baby grand piano shipped by riverboat from New Orleans to the Houghton House.
Hindostan Falls was the first county seat of Martin County and worth visiting to view the low, wide waterfall and to learn the social history of the former village of Hindostan Falls.
House Rock is where Indians and the first settlers used the “rock houses” as meeting places, conventions centers of their day. It is formed by two several hundred-ton sandstone blocks slipping on the weak underlying foundation and lodging upon each other. This particular formation is the greatest of the cave shelters along the White River.
Jug Rock the Incredible natural geological rock formation, Jug Rock, composed of sandstone, located in Shoals near the East Fork of the White River. As the largest free-standing table rock formation (also called a “tea table“) in the United States east of the Mississippi River, the Jug Rock has created a great deal of interest in geological circles. The massive 60 foot high sandstone formation may be viewed by a walk along a 60 yard woodland path from the marked roadside turnout, west of Shoals on US Highway 50.
Lakeview Golf Course is located at West Boggs Lake; this 9-hole course has a beautiful view of the lake.

Of course, there are the buffalo, longhorn steers, donkeys, llama, pigs chickens, goats, cows, rabbits, etc. The Lark Ranch Corn Maze is good, clean family entertainment for Southern Indiana locals. Overlook Park is a panoramic view that showcases all that we have to offer in scenic Martin County. A map and tourist information is available on-site. A scenic view of the winding White River through river bottom, farms and valleys. Come enjoy the park’s shelter house and picnic areas. Overlook Park can be found along US Hwy 50 and State Road 450, west of Shoals. Centrally located for a stop along the way while site seeing.
Martin County Museum our Historical Society and Museum is located on Capital Ave in Shoals. We are also the caretakers of many old records and assessments. Many other old books and records starting in 1820 are shelved in our beautiful old courthouse building that was erected in 1876. Martin County Historical Society Ham and Bean Dinner on lawn of Museum (1st Saturday in October).
Martin State Forest visitor may discover many hiking trails, nature studies, wild foraging, hunting, picnicking, shelter houses and playgrounds.
The Pinnacle (directly across from the cabin) is a geological rock formation along a cliff overlooking the East Fork of the White River at Shoals. Views of the valley at the top of the Pinnacle are worth the uphill hike to this “tower of rock”. The front part of a massive sandstone formation The Pinnacle is a perpendicular descent of over two hundred feet. Astonishingly beautiful to view, humbling to stand beneath and surprisingly near-by in Shoals, Southern Indiana.
Sprout Springs is a cold and clear water continues to flow from the ground at Spout Springs. One of the highest volume springs in Indiana, you can’t miss this stop in Martin County. The spring exits from the base of Beaver Bluff, eight-tenths of a mile southwest of Shoals. On a sprawling rock wall, known as the “Date Rock,” locals go out on boats during the seasonal floods and mark, in paint, the water levels and the date on the wall.

Williams Dam & Covered Bridge formerly a site of a power plant, the Williams dam is still in place holding the White River back and raising the water level to provide drinking water for Bedford and Mitchell. The raised water level also provides boating and fishing for sportsmen. South of the dam, just down the road, is the wooden covered bridge. In 1981, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Take Hwy. 450 from Shoals to Williams.
Spring Mill State Park is taking a step back in time to the early 1860’s, from the pioneer village with 20 historical structures, rock and cave exploring to visiting the Virgil I. “Gus” Grissom Memorial.
French Lick Golf Course has the rolling hills of southern Indiana that provide a beautiful yet challenging golf destination. This classic course designed by iconic architect Donald Ross, underwent a $5 million restoration in collaboration with the Donald Ross Society. When the project was completed, 80 of Ross’ trademark bunkers with flat bottoms and deep, gnarly faces were once again in place along with expanded, square or rectangular shaped greens that severely undulate. Thirty-five of these bunkers are original to the course that Ross constructed in 1917. The course is a par 70 and plays to 7,000 yards. There is an extensive irrigation system that covers the 60 acres of course and seven foot wide cart paths
